If you’ve been putting off trying your hand at developing HTAs because you didn’t want to have to pay for a devtool to build them, put it off no more.

Microsoft offers two Free Versions of software that you can download right now and start developing with. They are both part of a free “Visual Studio Express” suite of software offered to all of us at no cost what so ever.

The applications are called Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express and Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. They are both excellent packages loaded with all kinds of features.

You might want to start with the 2005 version, as the system requirements for 2008 look like you need to have a real beefy machine for that version.

Using these packages will also help you learn some basic HTML that's required if you want to create those nice GUI vbscript interfaces.
