Expert Tip: Getting a Handle on Regular Expressions

To perform sophisticated processing of strings through a script, you need to be comfortable with using regular expressions. Regular expressions describe a set of strings. The syntax of regular expressions can become convoluted, but once you understand how to use them you'll be able to implement them as a powerful component in your scripts. Perhaps the best book you can reference for regular expressions is Jeffery Friedl's Mastering Regular Expressions, currently in its 3 ^rd edition. If you're a newbie to regular expressions, you might also want to check out Bill Stewart's article "Rename Files by Using Regular Expressions" (InstantDoc ID 95072). In the article, he gives a short crash course on regular expressions that's easy to understand.
